Minimal Theme
This may be the most minimal theme for WordPress I’ve seen and it remains functional.
The idea was to have just one post at a time on the front page so I could post one article a month and when the next month rolled around the previous article would no longer be available. It is of course available in category or archive view if you want it to be.
There is a theme options page which controls 2 footer widget style areas, a 50/50 split in the bottom of the page.
You can also turn on multiple posts on the front page in classic blog style but still with minimalist in mind. There are no comments, no social media share buttons, and I’ve included 4 post format options, Aside, Quote, Image and Status. With the standard post option thats 5 altogether.
- Standard: Has a title, a permalink and a date, can be linked to but has no comment or other post meta, just a plain wite it and publish it format.
- Aside: No heading, has date with link to full post page for bookmarking or creating a small post with a public link.
- Quote: Dark colored background with large italic text. No link, no date no post meta whatsoever. It’s a quote it doesn’t need anything.
- Image: Just a large image with rounded corners to match the other post shapes. No text necessary on this one
- Status: Larger bold text, centered, no post meta or date, just a status update about you or a site announcement.
Post formats are considered outdated but they work well if you want to segregate your posts visually, Matt Mullenweg still uses them to great effect, and he’s the WordPress guy!
It will not suit everyone but if you want a noise free environment to post what’s on your mind then it might work for you.
I use it on simonmanley.com if you want to see it, if you’d like a copy get in touch and I’ll send you a link.
